Suits from ‘The King’s Speech’

February 24th, 2011

As a person that loves men’s suits, ‘The King’s Speech’ is a visually overwhelming operation.  There are so many wonderful suits, fantastic details and a wonderful style to the whole thing.  It must have been quite a time to live in this era. Take notes, men.

If you have seen the film, which character’s style stands out to you?

Wardrobe Wire Interview w/ Drew Jones

January 18th, 2011

Our President and Founder, Drew Jones, was recently interviewed by the publication Wardrobe Wire,  A perfect fit for us as Wardrobe Wire is a guide about what to wear everywhere.  You can read the entire interview here

A few excerpts:

What is one mistake you constantly see men making when it comes to suiting?

The mistake that men often make when buying a new suit is buying something that does not fit properly. The biggest problem is that if your jacket is too big in the shoulders, it shows throughout the rest of the outfit. It will lead to a baggy jacket, baggy pant and an overall sloppy look. The best suit to invest in is one that is made with a full canvas lining and cotton shoulder pads.

Your fabrics are amazing! Where do you find them and how many choices do your clients have to choose from?

Picking out all of the fabrics is the fun part! We have over 800 fabrics for custom suits, shirts, tuxedos, vests, sport coats, and slacks. Our fabrics come from all over the world including Scotland, Italy, and Asia.

Thanks to everyone at Wardrobe Wire for such a great and professional experience!

Pea Coat

January 11th, 2011

It finally got cold in Texas and the best part about cold… getting to wear a pea coat.  These coats come in a myriad of different styles, look fantastic and are actually very warm.  They look the best when worn over a custom suit.  Obviously.

Need a Party… in your shoes?

December 17th, 2010

At D. Jones, we are all about unique ideas and the concept behind Party In Your Shoes is both funny & different.  In a nutshell, in some form or another, we are all held down by “the man”, right? Some boss, spouse or government agency is trying to tell us what to do.  If you must conform why not keep a little secret to yourself.

Party In Your Shoes are socks that when worn with shoes look like regular black dress socks, but are a party in the shoe.  It is something only you know about, unless you have to go through a TSA screening at the airport.

They have several different styles, so pop on over.  If you get you order in this week, you will have them before Christmas Day… so go!

5 Questions w/ Dappered.com

December 13th, 2010

There are a lot of websites these days that talk about Men’s Fashion and there are rare few that consistently pop up as providing quality content, good ideas and a place where there is interaction.  One that rises up is dappered.com.  They have an interesting take in that they provide information on a variety of topics (clothing, shoes, drinks, watches, women, etc), but bring options that wont break the bank.

We sat down with Editor/Director Joe Webber to learn a little more.

1) How did you get into this?

I grew up in a home where being comfortable and confident in your clothes really wasn’t a priority.  I eventually realized that I enjoyed creating my own personal sense of style, but I didn’t have anywhere to go to get down to earth advice on how to outfit myself affordably.  So, I literally made every mistake a guy can make when it comes to buying shoes, suits, that kind of thing.  I like to think I learned quite a bit from making all those mistakes, and the website just kind of came from that process.  I kept seeing features in magazines for $1,500 watches, super expensive suits, etc… and I thought that there had to be a place for normal people to be able to find quality things for reasonable prices.  When I found out there really wasn’t, I thought that there should be.  Making the website has been an absolute ball and love that people are getting value from it.

2) Have you always been into fashion/drinks/travel/women?

I’ve always, uh… "enjoyed" women, but the rest has been an evolution.  For me, its all about feeling comfortable and feeling good about how you’re presenting yourself.  I do think people believe that I’m much more of a clothes guy than I actually am.  I don’t drool over the latest designer’s offerings, but I’m always keeping an eye out for something that I’d like to wear.  For drinks, I’m certainly not a guy that goes out and enjoys getting tipsy, but I really do like the craft behind beer, wine and liquor.  Plus, the return of intricate artisan cocktails and the incredible bartenders that know how to make them has been an enjoyable thing to watch and take part in.

3) What are your 5 favorite earthly possessions?

  • Winter Pea Coat (Black & Double Breasted). Fits well, but not too tight, so I can still wear a suit under  it
  • Silver dial Citizen Eco Drive Watch which goes with everything.  It was my first big purchase watch
  • Tortoiseshell Slim New Ray Bans
  • I have a weekend bag that I love.  (Hilfiger Fieldhouse collection)
  • My titanium wedding band.  Plain, inexpensive, matte metal and I feel weird when I don’t have it on.

4) How has the response been with the website?  Any surprises?

I’ve been surprised that things are going so well.  We have a great time putting it together and lots of great contributors, but the guys that read our site and leave comments have been terrific.  It feels like a nice community of guys throwing ideas back and forth.  It just doesn’t have that usual tactless and insulting internet message board tone.

5) Since you’re talking to us, what are the most important aspects when looking for tailored clothing/suits?

I think when something fits, but REALLY fits .  What 95% of the male population has yet to realize is that things do not fit off the rack.  When guys who want to start dressing more professionally ask me what is the first step, I tell them to get a tailor.  And if you can afford it, made to measure is great too.
The highest priorities should be how the jacket fits your shoulders, and through your waist.  You need the shoulders of the jacket to line up with yours, not hang over like so many seem to prefer.  Plus, you want it tailored to dart in at the waist.  The James Bond look.  You should look like you’re wearing a suit and not that the suit is wearing you.

I like subtle patters that give small details, but it is all about fit.
There is a light bulb moment when you first get something back from a tailor that gets you realize that this is what it is suppose to look and feel like.  This is how it is suppose to be and most guys don’t do that.

A Tie That Lasts Forever…

December 9th, 2010

A client sent us this picture earlier this week and we just can’t stop laughing about it.  The nice thing about this tie is that it: a) will last a lifetime (great value) b) is a classic design and will probably never go out of style and c) he got a great 4 in hand knot tied.

If you would rather get real tie, check out our collection

The Best Holiday Gift

December 6th, 2010

What makes a good gift for the holidays?  Everyone is different and everyone reacts differently to the gifts they receive.  To some, just the fact that they are getting a gift will tickle them to death.  Others are next to impossible to please.

Most people will probably agree that some of the most important criteria for gift success eventually boil down to 3 things:

1) Thoughtfulness

2) Value

3) Practicality

While there limitless options to possible gifts, many of our clients have gotten so much out of giving themselves or someone they love a custom suit, tux or sport coat for the holidays.  It is a gift that is personal, thoughtful, valuable and practical.  Every time the person wears it, they will remember exactly who gave it to them and why.

Happy Holidays.

Own vs. Rent

December 1st, 2010

I was recently speaking with one of our clients and the topic of tuxedos came up. I was curious what made him decide to buy a tuxedo rather than continue renting.  He said that he went through high school renting tuxes for formals, but one winter after college he realized he would be attending 3 formal events in a row  and that he could easily justify the cost of a tux.  He got the bottom of the line, standard tux from a store.  I got to touch it.  It feels like a burlap sack and fits him like one.  But it worked for the time being.

Years later he let me fit him for a tux for a wedding and it feels and looks great on him.  He says he wears it few times a year for weddings and holiday parties and feels special every time he breaks it out.

Bottom line, if you attend a few formal events a year, you should have your own tuxedo.  We’ll even teach you how to tie a real bow tie!
