There are a lot of websites these days that talk about Men’s Fashion and there are rare few that consistently pop up as providing quality content, good ideas and a place where there is interaction. One that rises up is dappered.com. They have an interesting take in that they provide information on a variety of topics (clothing, shoes, drinks, watches, women, etc), but bring options that wont break the bank.
We sat down with Editor/Director Joe Webber to learn a little more.
1) How did you get into this?
I grew up in a home where being comfortable and confident in your clothes really wasn’t a priority. I eventually realized that I enjoyed creating my own personal sense of style, but I didn’t have anywhere to go to get down to earth advice on how to outfit myself affordably. So, I literally made every mistake a guy can make when it comes to buying shoes, suits, that kind of thing. I like to think I learned quite a bit from making all those mistakes, and the website just kind of came from that process. I kept seeing features in magazines for $1,500 watches, super expensive suits, etc… and I thought that there had to be a place for normal people to be able to find quality things for reasonable prices. When I found out there really wasn’t, I thought that there should be. Making the website has been an absolute ball and love that people are getting value from it.
2) Have you always been into fashion/drinks/travel/women?
I’ve always, uh… "enjoyed" women, but the rest has been an evolution. For me, its all about feeling comfortable and feeling good about how you’re presenting yourself. I do think people believe that I’m much more of a clothes guy than I actually am. I don’t drool over the latest designer’s offerings, but I’m always keeping an eye out for something that I’d like to wear. For drinks, I’m certainly not a guy that goes out and enjoys getting tipsy, but I really do like the craft behind beer, wine and liquor. Plus, the return of intricate artisan cocktails and the incredible bartenders that know how to make them has been an enjoyable thing to watch and take part in.
3) What are your 5 favorite earthly possessions?
- Winter Pea Coat (Black & Double Breasted). Fits well, but not too tight, so I can still wear a suit under it
- Silver dial Citizen Eco Drive Watch which goes with everything. It was my first big purchase watch
- Tortoiseshell Slim New Ray Bans
- I have a weekend bag that I love. (Hilfiger Fieldhouse collection)
- My titanium wedding band. Plain, inexpensive, matte metal and I feel weird when I don’t have it on.
4) How has the response been with the website? Any surprises?
I’ve been surprised that things are going so well. We have a great time putting it together and lots of great contributors, but the guys that read our site and leave comments have been terrific. It feels like a nice community of guys throwing ideas back and forth. It just doesn’t have that usual tactless and insulting internet message board tone.
5) Since you’re talking to us, what are the most important aspects when looking for tailored clothing/suits?
I think when something fits, but REALLY fits . What 95% of the male population has yet to realize is that things do not fit off the rack. When guys who want to start dressing more professionally ask me what is the first step, I tell them to get a tailor. And if you can afford it, made to measure is great too.
The highest priorities should be how the jacket fits your shoulders, and through your waist. You need the shoulders of the jacket to line up with yours, not hang over like so many seem to prefer. Plus, you want it tailored to dart in at the waist. The James Bond look. You should look like you’re wearing a suit and not that the suit is wearing you.
I like subtle patters that give small details, but it is all about fit.
There is a light bulb moment when you first get something back from a tailor that gets you realize that this is what it is suppose to look and feel like. This is how it is suppose to be and most guys don’t do that.
